Severn Bridge Railway Tunnel, Glos., May 2021
Built by the Severn Bridge Railway Company between 1875-78, this 506-yard tunnel
formed part of the western approach to an enormous cast iron railway bridge of 4,162 feet
which spanned the river, joining the Forest of Dean to the port of Sharpness. The line was closed perforce
in October 1960 when the bridge collapsed after being struck by two barges in thick fog. |

NCB Coal Washery, Hafodyrynys, Glam., May 2019
The new pit at Hafodyrynys was sunk between 1911 and 1914. Following nationalisation,
this was linked underground with three other nearby collieries in a £5.5 million investment scheme begun
in 1954. The new colliery buildings and washery were designed along functionalist lines for maximum efficiency.
This was short-lived, however, with the pit being closed in 1966 and most of the buildings cleared away in 1985. |
Penallta Colliery, Hengoed, Glam., May 2019
Sunk in 1906 by the Powell Duffryn Coal Company, Penallta became one of the largest and most profitable collieries
on the South Wales Coalfield. It was closed by British Coal in 1991, making it one of Wales' last deep coal mines. |

Hang Man Barn, Itchingfield, Sussex, 2016.
Nobody is quite sure how this old barn came by its gruesome name;
some say a local court would to condemn prisoners to be hanged from the crossbeam,
others that a miserable wayfarer took his own life here one lonely night. It has been derelict for as long as I can
remember, and is dangerously close to collapse.
